Twenty years after the Violent Femmes helped define the sound of underground '80s and '90s rock, lead singer Gordon Gano goes it alone. While Gano's 20-year-career as the Violent Femmes frontman and songwriter on eight full-length releases (including the seminal folk and country-inflected Hallowed Ground from 1985, and 1986's innovative Blind Leading the Naked produced by ex-Talking Heads Jerry Harrison) is well-documented, Gano's solo work on innumerable side projects is not. As a true indie-rock Renaissance man, Gordon Gano hasn't stopped creating and working with music since the Violent Femmes' inception in the early '80s. Producing other artists' albums, scoring musicals, and appearing on soundtracks for 20 years has garnered Gano a reputation for artistic range and diversity. On Hitting the Ground, Gano's consummate musicianship shines through.
As the mastermind behind infamous now-classics like 'Blister in the Sun,' 'Kiss Off' and 'Add it Up,' Gordon Gano gave a quivering voice to geek-like vulnerability, sexually charged eager frustration, and combative youth. However, don't expect to hear only that notorious voice on Hitting the Ground, Gordon Gano's solo debut. Written almost entirely for other vocalists, and originally conceived for a film, this remarkably cohesive, fiercely rockin' album is indicative of Gano's undeniable songwriting talents.
Hitting the Ground, is a solid collection of songs written for some of rock music's most influential and notable figures, including PJ Harvey, the Velvet Underground's Lou Reed and John Cale, Frank Black, They Might Be Giants, Mary Lou Lord, and others!
