A former professional soccer player, Martin began his musical career writing songs for other acts. With Bernie Taupin, he co-wrote "We Built This City" for Starship and "These Dreams" for Heart, both becoming number one hits. In the mid-80s Martin and friend Brian Fairweather formed a new wave band, Q-Feel, whose song "Dancing in Heaven" received airplay in dance clubs and on an L.A. radio station, and was later featured on the "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" soundtrack. The song "We Built This City" was originally written for Q-Feel.
He counts as his musical influences early Elton John, early Beatles and Genesis, the Brothers Johnson, Sly Stone, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Blue Nile. Songs he wishes he wrote include Dion's Abraham, Martin John, Bob Marley's No Woman, No Cry, and Jimmy Cliff's Many Rivers To Cross. The last book he read was The Castle by Kafka.
Martin has written songs for Paul Young, The Triplets, Robbie Robertson, Kim Carnes, John Waite, Bad English, and the Commodores, among many others. His latest endeavor was a song he co-wrote with Bernie Taupin, "Dance With Life (The Brilliant Light)," which was performed by Bryan Ferry for the "Phenomenon" soundtrack. He is currently finishing up a follow-up album, which he began working on in May of 1996. It is estimated the album will be ready for release in 1998.
Born September 23, 1959, Martin is unmarried. He is originally from Southampton, England and now lives in Encino, California where he shares his home with his cat and two goldfish.
