Actor/comedian Mark Curry, best known for portraying Mark Cooper on the hit ABC-TV sitcom "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper" for five seasons as well as hosting “Showtime at the Apollo,” is back on TV with three new shows. Mark can currently be seen competing on ABC’s “CELEBRITY MOLE 2: YUCATAN.” Mark is the host of PAX weekly entertainment variety series for animal lovers entitled “ANIMAL TAILS.” He can also be seen hosting BET’s highest rated new show, the one-hour reality comedy competition “COMING TO THE STAGE.”
Mark has guest starred on numerous television series including “The Drew Carey Show,” “Mad TV,” “The Jamie Foxx Show,” “Martin,” “Living Single” and “For Your Love.” He makes regular stand-up appearances on "The Tonight Show,” “Late Night With Conan O'Brien," "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and Comedy Central. Mark has also starred in the independent films "The Fanatics" and "A Man is Mostly Water” and had a hilarious cameo role in the blockbuster "Armageddon."
From a young age, Mark always wanted to give comedy a try, having grown up idolizing such comedians as Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby. A strong believer in higher education, he attended California State University at Hayward, eventually leaving to manage a local drugstore in Oakland. In 1987, encouraged by customers whom he constantly kept in stitches, he made his comedic debut in an Oakland comedy club.
An immediate success, Mark began headlining at all the major comedy clubs in San Francisco and Oakland. By 1989, with his stand-up act proving an enormous success, he was able to quit his day job at the drugstore and pursue comedy full-time. Mark quickly began attracting attention in the world of comedy, culminating with the taping of his very own half-hour HBO special "One Night Stand." Mark’s HBO special caught the attention of ABC-TV talent executives who signed him to star in his own sitcom. 1992 marked the premiere of "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper," the show that went on to make him an international star. In 1996, Mark returned to his hometown of Oakland, CA to tape his own One Hour HBO Comedy Special entitled "Mark Curry: The Other Side.”
Despite his busy schedule, Mark continues to perform his stand-up comedy in sold-out comedy clubs across the country. In spite of all his success, Mark still remains an extremely grounded person. He spends a great deal of his spare time with his family in Oakland and returns frequently to give back to the very city he grew up in. Mark makes it a goal to reach out to underprivileged children, encouraging them to stay in school and off drugs, citing himself as a perfect example of someone who had a dream and made it come true.
