Since the age of 13, Sergio has dedicated his life to music. At 16, he and his brother Arnaldo, together with singer Rita Lee, joined forces to create “Os Mutantes". This is still, to this day, considered to be the most important and popular rock bands in Brazil. The band was extremely influential in dictating significant changes of musical styles and direction. These subsequently impacted on the political and behavioral attitudes of Brazilian culture during it's sensitive “tropicalisno" period. Sergio Dias, as a touring and recording artist, has appeared with most of the current wave of Brazilian musicians too numerous to mention.
In the USA, Sergio has written, co-produced and performed with Eumir Deodato. He spent four years touring North America with Airto Moreira and Flora Purin. After that he toured the USA with legendary Indian violinist L. Shankar and subsequently with flautist Jermy Steig. Sergio Dias is considered, according to the Brazilian music magazines, to be the most popular and influential guitarist from the '70s through to now. He is a household name in Brazil and in October 1993 received the O Globo Music Award. This is awarded to the best Brazilian musician in the Guitar Hero category.
Sergio's music spectrum encompasses such diverse styles as bebop, avant garde, Eastern and a wide variety of world and new age music. He is a dedicated musician whose life revolves around his quest to incorporate versatility and technical expertise to the raw emotion of his Brazilian soul. Os Mutantes - The "Mutants" were the rock and roll side of Brazil's Tropicália movement, performing on the landmark album of the same name and backing Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso on stage in important song festival appearances. The Mutantes were the first artistically important rock band in Brazil. They mixed psychedelic rock with Latin and Brazilian flavors, avant-garde classical touches, lyrics in four languages, surreal lyrics, irreverence and lots of irony. Sérgio Dias Baptista, Arnaldo Dias Baptista and Rita Lee formed the core of the group during its heyday from 1966-1972, augmented on some albums by bassist Liminha (Arnolpho Lima Filho) and drummer Dinho (Ronaldo Leme). Rita left the Mutantes in '73 to follow a successful solo career. Arnaldo departed the next year and recorded solo albums like the acclaimed Loki in '74. Sérgio kept the Mutantes alive until '78, and afterwards recorded albums with the likes of L. Shankar and Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera. Liminha went on to become one of Brazil's greatest rock producers. The Mutantes had a short career but a huge impact on Brazilian rock and pop. They were also, arguably, the first truly international rock group. In later years, the Mutantes have developed an international cult following, with Beck, Kurt Cobain, the Posies and Sean Ono Lennon among their many fans.
