Denise was born Denise Allen in Leflore County, Mississippi. Today, aside from her heavy touring schedule, her home is in Jackson, Tennessee. Her success as an artist began in 1967, with the help of Billy "The Kid" Emerson. Denise recorded her first single, "A Love Reputation", followed by one of her most memorable hits, "Married, But Not To Each Other". Denise later signed with Westbound Records, scoring many of her biggest hits, including "Man Sized Job".
The sultry entertainer is also an accomplished songwriter. Her songs have been recorded by country greats, Barbara Mandrell and Rita Coolidge. Denise has written songs for Ann Peebles, Latimore, Little Milton, and the late Z. Z. Hill. She has successfully recorded over 14 LP's during her musical career. Among her many achievements, she earned a Gold Record for her album, "Trapped By A Thing Called Love". The record stayed at number one on the R & B soul charts for 16 weeks in 1971.
In 1976, Denise signed with ABC Records and recorded, "Second Breath", "The Bitch Is Bad", and "Under The Influence", up until 1978. Denise then moved to MCA and released, "Unwrapped", which contained a plethora of hits. The most popular hit was a 15 minute remake of "Trapped By A Thing Called Love", which scored again in a medley with "Make Me Yours", and "Precious Precious".
In 1982, Denise signed with Malaco Records. Her first release on her new label was the hit LP, "Lady In The Street". Her second release on the Malaco label entitled, "Right Place, Right Time", featured the late Z. Z. Hill's "Down Home Blues". Denise had enormous success with her third album, "Love Talkin'" which included the smash hit, "My Tu Tu", which reached the number one position in the United Kingdom (UK), Paris, and Germany.
The undisputed queen of the sizzling blues is here to stay! Take a listen to her new album, "Smokin' In Bed". She covers everything including the steamy blues, R & B, hip-hop, and even a gospel style tune on the song, "Going Through Changes". Her diversity in song keeps her one of the most sought after artists to date
