Fyvush Finkel, who plays Fisher the travel agent in the updated version of FANTASY ISLAND, became an instant Hollywood legend with his acceptance speech after winning the Best Supporting Actor Emmy for his work on "Picket Fences".
"I don't care how much time they gave me. I waited 51 years for this moment", he thundered to the cheering packed house at the Pasadena Civic Center and a worldwide television audience of millions. He was all of 9-years-old when he made his professional debut in the numerous Jewish theaters along New York City's Second Avenue. "In every play they had a wedding scene and I got one dollar a night to sing "Oh Promise Me" from a box seat just off the stage", Finkel explained of his entry into show business. He stayed with Yiddish theater for the next 40 years appearing in every phase of that genre.
His breakthrough in American mainstream theater came when he joined Jerome Robbins' National touring company of the Broadway hit "Fiddler On the Roof", playing first the butcher and then the lead, Tevya, over a brilliant 12-year run. Other stage success included an Obie-winning performance in Joseph Papp's "Cafe Crown" and a five-year stint as the star of Off-Broadway's "Little Shop of Horrors". Finkel first met FANTASY ISLAND executive producer Barry Sonnenfeld's when he appeared in his film "For Love or Money". Additional film credits include "Mobsters", "Seize the Day" and "Q&A".
Emmy winner David E. Kelley cast Finkel in his series, "Picket Fences", after seeing his performance in "Q&A". During the four years on "Picket Fences", Finkel won an Emmy Award, received two additional Emmy nominations in addition to numerous other honors for his brilliant characterization of the irascible attorney.
Prior to FANTASY ISLAND, Finkel has held guest-starring roles on series including "Early Edition" and "The Simpsons". On film, he appeared in Oliver Stone's "Nixon". Additionally, he narrated the animated feature "Aaron's Magic Village" and Walt Disney's "The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars".
A native of Brooklyn, Finkel, the consummate family man, still makes his permanent home in nearby Manhattan so that he and his wife of 50 years, Trudi, can be near their two musician sons, Ian and Elliott, three grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
