Gavin MacLeod Born: Feb 28, 1930, Mt. Kisco, New York

Real name is Allan See. Father was a Chippewa Indian and owned a gas station. Little Allan See was raised in Pleasantville, New York (Home of Reader's Digest) and graduated from Ithaca College in 1952. His drama coach / director there was Beatrice Macleod and at the time he was also taken by a TV drama called "Gavin" about a cerebral palsy victim. After encouragement by friends later, he changed his name from Allan See. After college he joined the US Air Force and was a member of the US Air Force Band, who's leader at the time was Tommy Newson, later of the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" band. Gavin then moved to New York City and his first job was as an usher and elevator operator at Radio City Music Hall. He married a rockette in 1955 (Patty), had 4 children in a marriage that lasted 18 years. Interesting note: he was very good friends back then with Tadeus Wladyslew Konopka, who later changed his name to Ted Knight! Their friendship lasted almost 30 years. In 1961 Gavin played his first job with Mary Tyler Moore, as a Jewelry Salesman on an episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show. This later let to his being hired as Murray Slaughter. In 1974, he married his 2nd (and 3rd) wife, Patti (Yes, both wives named Patty/Patti!). Read below about "Back on Course".

Interesting Gavin MacLeod Facts: Gavin MacLeod almost didn't take role of Captain Stubing because he was playing in "Annie Get Your Gun" in San Francisco. For the pilot episode of "The Love Boat", he flew back and forth between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Broke his ankle in a episode where Julie got married (in Sydney), and was shot from the waist up and "pulled" down the aisle to make it look like he was walking!

His favorite show was from a September 1982 two hour musical staring Ethel Merman, Ann Miller and Carol Channing, Van Johnson, Della Reese and Cab Calloway. The entire cast and crew sang and danced on the decks and up and down the halls. It was a sight to see!

Captain Stubing NEVER drank on the show. His character was an alcoholic, and this was mentioned in an episode with Raymond Burr, (playing a drunk)

At the time The Love Boat" was made, Princess Cruises only had TWO ships, The Pacific Princess and the Island Princess.

Gavin MacLeod, though mostly known for his role as Captain Merrill Stubing and Murray Slaughter on the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" has been a busy actor through the years. He is currently still promoting Princess Cruises and makes appearances on television shows. He made his personal life very public in a biography he authored in 1987 called "Back on Course, The Remarkable Story of a Divorce That Ended in Remarriage". It is almost impossible to find, bookstores cannot order it. I got my copy by "borrowing" it from a public library, "losing it" and paying them for it. What depths have I sunk to (no pun intended). They currently have a radio show on the Trinity Broadcasting Network called "Back on Course: A Ministry for Marriages".
