Mack & Jamie

Jamie Alcroft was working as a disc jockey at a Florida radio station in 1979 when he got a note from somebody named Mack Dryden suggesting they get together. "You're one of the funniest men in town," read the note "I'm the other one."

To make a wild and colorful story short, they worked up an act and hit the road after building a plywood platform over the passenger seat so one could drive while the other slept.

In New York, they took the comedy club circuit by storm. Their clean, physical, musical, anything-can-happen style left patrons begging for mercy and club-owners begging for bookings.

They'd been working together for less than two years when the call came from "The Tonight Show." Johnny Carson and his audience howled at their fast-paced bits, parodies and impressions of everybody from a tipsy wine connoisseur to Sean Connery, and they were asked back almost immediately.

That and other TV appearances led to their own syndicated show called "Comedy Break", where they taped 125 half-hours in about six months ("I was reading my dreams off cue cards," said Jamie). The guest performers they worked with reads like a Who's Who of Hollywood: Leslie Neilsen, Betty White, Julia Duffy, John Larroquette, Richard Moll, Paul Reiser and many, many, more. Their memories from the show sometimes seem surreal. Mack and legendary comedienne Ruth Buzzi once smeared food all over each other in a memorably messy scene, and Jamie and Vanna White once locked in a passionate stage kiss while dressed as roaches.

Since then, they've been seen on dozens of TV shows, most recently on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. They've also performed on "An Evening at the Improv," "Caroline's Comedy Club" and VH-1. Their "News and Ugly Rumors"' segment that opened ABC’s "Into The Night" was a big hit on the show.

They starred in Dino deLaurentis' feature film Million Dollar Mystery as bumbling FBI agents. As originally written, their roles were serious, but Mack & Jamie convinced the director that their unique brand of skewed humor could play well. After deLaurentis saw the resulting scenes--which the duo wrote as well--he ordered six more scenes starring "Bob and Fred," including a long scene that played under the credits.

For two seasons, Mack played the part of Beatty the bartender on ABC's "Paradise," starring Lee Horsley, and as Keith Carradine's best friend in an ABC Movie of the Week, "My Father, My Son." This past year Bill Maher personally asked Mack to be a staff writer on "Politically Incorrect" which he accepted.

Jamie-the Man of Many Voices--is heard constantly on movie previews and radio and TV commercials, most recently as the voice of the famous (and award winning) Whiskas parakeet.

The team has appeared in national commercials for such companies as MCI and General Mills, and their off-the-wall commercials for WCKG Radio in Chicago brought offers from other stations across the country. Their commercial for a How-To-Use-Your-VCR videotape won a Clio award.

Mack & Jamie are no strangers to the casino stages in Las Vages and Atlantic City either, having performed with such headline artists as Diana Ross, Michael McDonald, and Melissa Manchester. They're even big abroad, having wowed audiences in Sydney, Australia, on the Queen Elizabeth II out of London, and twice on "The Des O'Connor Show," Great Britain's version of the "Tonight Show."

Mack & Jamie's voices are heard every week on more than 500 radio stations that subscribe to the "Premiere Radio Network." Their "Audio and Julio" characters ("Julio, I accept your condiments with deep humidity") are favorites in more than 200 cities ("It goes without staying, and that's not just a finger of speech").

Mack & Jamie have become favorites on the corporate circuit because they're clean ("We've worked for Bible salesmen"), hilarious ("My cheeks hurt" is a common complaint"), flexible (they once performed for twenty executives -sitting around a campfire and 8,000 nurses in 24 hours) and creative customizers ("The reason we work for folks like Nissan, General Motors and others over and over is because we know how to come up with material that's special for their group--they love that").

One of their specialities is hosting award shows. Ask any group why they're having Mack & Jamie host their annual ceremony --- often for the second or third time --- and you'll get basically the same answer: the duo can turn a dreaded evening of polite applause and long walks to the stage into a night of pure fun.

They also write and perform in dozens of in-house videos, most recently for The Gartner Group, Sony, Infiniti, Isuzu, Embassy Suites Hotels, and Kraft Foods.

Their new play "Two For All" garnered rave reviews in Hollywood. The show was a Critic's Choice of the L.A. Times, which said Mack & Jamie are "the smoothest, most engaging paring since Bob Hope met Bing Crosby."

At this writing, a screenplay based on -the duo's exploits is being developed with an eye to making a feature film.
