Jim Palmer
Palmer, Walter Johnson, and Lefty Grove are the only pitchers in American League history to have won 20 or more games in eight seasons, and Palmer's 2.86 ERA places him fifth among pitchers who worked 3,000 innings or more. He lead the league twice in ERA (1973, 1975), and was in the top-five 10 times during his career. Palmer showed he knew how to win the big games by being the winning pitcher in the first four pennant clinching games in Baltimore's history (1966, 1969, 1970, 1971). He had an 8-3 record with a 2.61 ERA in postseason play, and in 1983 became the only pitcher in baseball history to win a World Series game in three different decades. Palmer is unquestionably the finest pitcher in Orioles history, and is one of five whose uniform number (22) has been retired, along with Brooks Robinson (5) and Frank Robinson (20), Earl Weaver (4), and Eddie Murray (33). True to form, he has always made his job as a celebrity endorser look simple even when it wasn't. His debut endorsement for Jocky International called for a public appearance, dressed in nothing more than a pair of briefs. Palmer, of course, discharged his duties with characteristic grace. What he revealed most about himself on the Jockey assignment was his consummate professionalism. Where other celebrity endorsers would stop at appearing in ads, Jim took his responsibilities further. He traveled coast-to-coast conducting over 500 in-store appearances,narrating fashion shows, TV and radio interviews. The Jockey Story was an unqualified success.
